Two villages end 300-year tiff, lift marriage ban

A feud that began 300 years ago is finally over, and descendants from the feuding ancestors may now intermarry… if they so wish.
A ceremony was held early this month to mark the reconciliation between the villages of Wushan and Yuepu in Quanzhou City, in southeastern China’s Fujian province.
A dispute had erupted between the two villages over irrigation water.
During the dry season, both tried to divert water from a stream to irrigate their fields, leading to quarrels.
Eventually, both sides swore never to take their spouses from the other.
Over the centuries, descendants had obediently abided by their ancestors’ decree.
