Film showing, talks at KHC on July 13

Informative back-to-back events are scheduled at the Awat Keng Auditorium of Kaisa Heritage Center in Intramuros, Manila on July 13.
Kaisa Para Sa Kaunlaran (菲律濱華裔青年聯合會) and Philippine Association of Chinese Studies (PACS 菲律濱中華研究會), in cooperation with the Filipino-Chinese Friendship Association (菲中友好協會), will hold a film showing and two lectures on Chinese issues by experts.
A film showing of “Honor: Legacy of Jose Abad Santos” is scheduled at 1 p.m. It will be followed by the Benito Lim Memorial Lecture Series No. 2 at 3 p.m.
The lecture on “Current Chinese Migration to the Philippines: Government safety measures and security arrangements” will be discussed by Dr. Rommel Banlaoi while Dr. Aileen Baviera will talk about “Forty Years of China-Watching from the Eyes of a Filipino.”
Banlaoi’s lecture describes the current phenomenon of Chinese migration to the Philippines and identifies some factors contributing to this phenomenon.
It discusses the economic effects, political impacts and social costs of new Chinese migration to the Philippines and its law enforcement and security implications.
Banlaoi is president of PACS and lecturer at the Department of International Studies, Miriam College; chairman of the Philippine Institute for Peace, Violence and Terrorism Research; and president of the Philippine Society for Intelligence and Security Studies.
Baviera’s journey as an engaged China-watcher is a prism from which China’s economic, social and political transformations may be understood, and also helps contextualize the twists and turns of Philippines-China relations.
Baviera is a professor at the University of the Philippines. She has been studying, lecturing and publishing on China-related issues, as well as engaging in dialogue and cooperation with Chinese think tanks, academics and development organizations for nearly 40 years.
