Amid a blistering heat wave, the number of orders for late-night snacks in major cities have climbed to more than double the usual levels.
A popular online food ordering platform showed the top 10 busiest cities for the midnight snack economy: Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Wenzhou, Guangzhou, Beijing, Wuhan, Fuzhou, Xiamen, and Nanjing, reported 21st Century Education Research Institute.
How well the late-night snack economy does reflects a city’s vitality in terms of industries, population, employment, wealth, environment, and other factors.
Shanghai had the largest number of food orders and the highest sales volume during late night. It also ranks highest in per capita disposable income and newly-add job opportunities.
Beijing is the only northern city among the top 10 of late-night snack orders. It ranks sixth due to its long winter period and relatively low temperatures at night.
