The Philippines brought home nine medals in the 8th Global Finals of “SPEAK!” English competition held at Singapore Science Center July 28-29.
There were 168 students from Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Singapore and the Philippines competing.
SPEAK! is a global English individual and team contest which tests the students’ listening, reading and writing skills.
The individual contest was divided into two parts: listening and reading. For the listening part, students had to answer questions based on audio recordings played for them.
The reading part focused on reading comprehension, grammar, sentence construction and composition writing.
The team contest required each six-member team to solve puzzles based on idioms, proverbs and riddles. They were also required to watch a short video and answer questions about the video. There were also trivia questions on general knowledge, western culture and literature.
Contestants were selected based on their performances in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools English Competition sponsored by the University of New South Wales last year.
Meanwhile in South Korea, 111 young Pinoy math wizards brought home 21 gold, 41 silver, 35 bronze medals and 14 merit awards during the 2018 World Mathematics Invitational held at Yonsei University from July 13-17.
Now on its sixth year, WMI is the first international competition founded by Taiwan and open to kindergarten to senior high school students. The final stage of the competition is held in different countries every year.
The written paper consisted of two parts: Logical Reasoning Test and Applications Test, where abilities in combination, number theory, algebra, calculation, geometry and reasoning were tested.
In the Mini Math Creative competition, students from all over the world were invited to do a research project regarding math.
This year, Reiona Ckyle Mundala (Grade 7, Lipa City Science Integrated National High School) won bronze and US$100 for her WMI Mini Math Creative Video about the Pythagorean Theorem.
Wesley Gavin Palomar (Grade 8, Philippine Science High School-Main Campus) received Star of the World Cup for being the overall top scorer in the country.
A total of 1,100 students from South Korea, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam, and the Philippines participated in the competition.
